For our project we were tasked with creating a sound piece that would aurally represent The Markets area in Belfast, located in the inner city. The Market area was once a very busy trading area, with many markets located there. It is one of the oldest communities in Belfast.
The expanding city grew around The Market, which has become enclosed on all sides. The quiet community is surrounded by bustling urban sounds from the trains arriving at Central Station and the busy business district in Lanyon Place – which was once part of The Market itself. St George’s market is one of the remaining markets in the area
This piece is a sonic exploration of The Market community. It aims to transport the listener to the area, examining the contrast between the peaceful residential community and the surrounding urban soundscape, delving into the rich history of the area, and exploring the prospective development of the community – with particular emphasis on the development of the tunnels.
The piece captures the every day life of the residents living in The Markets through experimental manipulation of field recordings and interviews.
